Men's Basketball Is Set Back, 79-70, By Alvernia

Widener was outlasted by Alvernia, 79-70, in Commonwealth Conference action on Wednesday night in Reading, PA. 
 
Widener (8-6, 2-5 CC) got off to a slow start and fell behind 41-33 at halftime.  It was 15 second-half points from senior Rob McPherson (Bowie, MD) that helped the Pride reduce the lead, but Alvernia held on to improve to 4-3 in league play. 
 
McPherson led the Pride with 25 points on 10-of-22 from the field and 3-for-4 from the line.  McPherson continues to lead the Pride with 18.5 points per game. 
 
Off the bench, sophomore David Nicholson (Odenton, MD) scored 12 points on 2-of-3 shooting from beyond the arc and was 4-for-4 from the line.  Fellow sophomore Laron Byrd (Philadelphia, PA) went 3-of-5 from beyond the arc to add 13 points for the Pride.  Byrd also added five rebounds and two assists over 36 minutes. 
 
Junior forward Greg Lawson (Mount Holly, NJ) led the team with 12 rebounds as well as going 3-of-7 for seven points.  
 
Widener entered the contest second in the NCAA in free throws made, eighth in points per game and ninth in rebounding margin.  Lawson came in the game fifth in double-doubles and sixth in rebounds per contest.

Leading Alvernia (9-5, 4-3) was Lamont Clark with 19 points and seven rebounds.  Defensively, the Crusaders were paced by Harrison Deyo with 11 rebounds and two blocks to go along with his 20 points. 
 
Widener returns home Saturday against Hood at 3:00 pm.
