Karen Thomas' Two Goals Propels Women's Soccer to 3-0 Blanking of Washington (MD)

(box score)

Karen Thomas (Mullica Hill, NJ) had two goals and an assist with fellow senior Kelly Buckley (Villanova, PA) adding a goal and two assists for Widener, which remained undefeated with a 3-0 triumph at Washington (MD).

Widener dominated play in the opening half and spent most of that time with the lead thanks to a goal in the 11th minute. Thomas took a feed from Buckley and shot one inside the left post for a 1-0 cushion.

Buckley got her turn 10 minutes later for a 2-0 margin. After receiving a pass from Thomas, Buckley fired one from 15 yards that went inside the right post for her first goal of the year.

Thomas made things academic in the 67th minute with her third goal of the season and 14th career. Buckley dribbled past the defense and booted a crossing pass to Thomas, who buried one from 10 yards for her fourth career multi-goal contest.

All was more than enough for the Pride, who closed with an 18-12 shots edge and took all seven corner kicks in the match.

Thomas ended with five shots, senior Julia Flower (Burlington, CT) and junior Jenna Pedrick (Sicklerville, NJ) had three apiece and senior Valarie Perretti (Clayton, NJ) made three saves for the Pride.

Heather Smith attempted five shots and Melissa Barry totaled six saves for the Shorewomen (1-1-1).

It is the first time the Pride (2-0-1) have recorded a result in each of their first three games since the 2009 squad opened a school-record 7-0-1.

Widener is on the road Tuesday to face Immaculata, starting at 4:00 pm.
