Field Hockey Remains Perfect With a 4-1 Victory Over Swarthmore

(box score)

Widener allowed an early goal but fought back to score four straight against Swarthmore to remain undefeated on the season with a 4-1 road victory.

Swarthmore (1-3) struck first when Anne Rosenblatt received a pass off a penalty corner and rocketed a goal nine minutes into the match.

Widener looked as if it was going to go into halftime down 1-0 when it was awarded a penalty corner. The pass was sent to sophomore Ashley Aires (Bayville, NJ) who fired the ball towards the goal where sophomore Meghan Garvey (Avondale, PA) deflected it into the net with just one second remaining on the clock.

The Pride had all the momentum going into the second half as Garvey found the goal for her second of the match and sixth in the season. Senior Brittany Gunderson (Turnersville, NJ) crossed the ball from the right side and found Garvey in front of the net only a minute into the half. Garvey leads the Commonwealth Conference in both goals and also with 14 points.

Garvey unbelievably already has 20 goals in her brief career, moving her into eighth place in school history. Her 44 points puts her into a tie for 10th with two-time all-league standout Nicole Nardone (2009-12).

Ten minutes later, junior Mackenzie Lindquist (Ocean City, NJ) increased Widener's lead 3-1. Lindquist dribbled past a defender and fired the ball past the right foot of opposing goalie Gabby Capone for her first goal of the season.

The Pride were not done yet. Gunderson added her first goal of the season with 40 seconds left for the final. Garvey passed the ball towards the net and Gunderson was able to poke it into the bottom right corner and make Widener 3-0 for the second time in three seasons.

Junior Maggie Karmeris (Wilmington, DE) made two saves and defended against 15 penalty corners in goal.

Widener returns home on Tuesday, as it looks to remain unbeaten, versus Eastern at 7:00 pm.
