Women's Soccer Breaks School Record in 1-0 Win over Delaware Valley

(box score)

Freshman Brittany Allison (Coatesville, PA) scored a beautiful goal in the 39th minute and Widener notched its team-best sixth straight shutout in a 1-0 victory over Delaware Valley at Leslie C. Quick Jr. Stadium.

The Pride (6-0-1) owned play throughout the contest, especially in the opening half when it posted a 20-0 shots edge. It was with just over six minutes left in the stanza when junior Jaclyn Miller (Media, PA) fed a great through ball to Allison, who buried one from 15 yards past goalkeeper Julie Burnell for her second goal of the season.

Senior Karen Thomas (Mullica Hill, NJ) fired seven shots in the opening half and finished the match with 12 in leading Widener to a 34-1 edge. Senior Kelly Buckley (Villanova, PA) added six shots for the Pride, who closed with all 12 corner kicks.

Widener has outscored its opponents 14-1 this season and owns a 55-18 edge in corner kicks. Senior Valarie Perretti (Clayton, NJ), the two-time defending Commonwealth Conference Goalkeeper of the Week, did not have to make a save for the Pride.

Burnell was hardly to blame for the loss as her play kept the Aggies (2-5) in the game. She made six saves in the first half and seven in the second to close with 13.

The shutout streak breaks the mark of five set in 2008 and the Pride continue their best start since opening 7-0-1 in 2009. The six-game winning streak is the team's longest since a seven-game run in 2010.

It was nice to see freshman Brittany Allison and junior Jackie Miller combine to score a big goal for the team," Widener coach Brian Sheehan said. "I was real pleased with the way our team moved the ball for 90 minutes. Each game we are focused on improving to get ready for (Commonwealth) conference play."

Widener, ranked eighth in the latest NSCAA Mid-Atlantic Region Poll, closes its four-game homestand Saturday against FDU-Florham, starting at 1:00 pm.
