Karen Thomas Nets Two More For Women's Soccer in 3-0 Blanking of Rutgers-Newark

(box score)

Senior Karen Thomas (Mullica Hill, NJ) scored another two goals as Widener notched its fifth straight shutout to tie the school record in a 3-0 triumph over Rutgers-Newark at Leslie C. Quick Jr. Stadium.

Thomas' hustle helped create the first goal as she was taken down in the box, leading to a penalty kick in the fourth minute. She left no doubt as she buried it past goalkeeper Diana Aviles for a 1-0 margin.

Widener controlled play throughout, but waited until the 70th minute before netting its second goal. Senior Kelly Buckley (Villanova, PA) got the ball and fed it for Thomas, who put one inside the right post for her team-leading seventh goal of the season.

Buckley got her team-leading sixth assist of the year in the 79th minute to close the scoring. She took the ball near the end line on the right side and passed back to junior Jenna Pedrick (Sicklerville, NJ), who buried one under the crossbar for her second goal of the year.

Senior Valarie Perretti (Clayton, NJ) made three saves in helping Widener to its longest shutout streak since establishing the mark in 2008. Thomas had seven shots as the Pride gained a 15-3 edge.

Aviles ended with five saves for the Scarlet Raiders (3-2-1).

Widener (5-0-1), off to its best start since opening 7-0-1 in 2009, is home Thursday against Delaware Valley, starting at 7:00 pm.
