Men's Soccer Handed Tough 1-0 Setback at Swarthmore

Boxscore
(box score)

Widener played Swarthmore tough as it usually does, but gave up a goal in the 83rd minute for a 1-0 setback as part of the "320 Challenge" in Swarthmore, PA.

Swarthmore in the second half gained an 8-1 shots edge despite a pesky Widener squad hanging around. Senior Jakub Valdner (Bratislava, Slovakia) was the main reason for the game remaining scoreless as he posted seven saves.

But the Garnet got the decider when Geoff Stewart launched a corner kick that Alex McClean headed in for the decider.

Grant Shaffer (Glen Rock, PA), fellow sophomore Eric Taylor (Bensalem, PA) and freshman Max Reid (Munich, Germany) each had a shot for the Pride.

David Geschwind had four shots off the bench and Peter Maxted only had to make one save for Swarthmore.

It the Pride's first setback this season in the challenge after the women's soccer and field hockey teams each notched victories. The challenge is between the schools in their 19 shared sports.

Widener is home Saturday against D'Youville, starting at 7:30 pm.
