Baseball Falls Twice at Stevenson

(Game 1) / (Game 2)

Sophomore Marc Noyalis (Dallas, PA) ran his career-best hitting streak to 16 games, but unfortunately it was one of the few bright spots for Widener in Commonwealth Conference losses, 6-3 and 3-1, at Stevenson.

The Mustangs (19-9, 8-4 CC) in game one scored once in the first on an RBI groundout from Troy Miller, and got two more in the second on a run-scoring single from Heath Johnson and a sacrifice fly from Brad Blum for a 3-0 margin.

Noyalis extended his streak the first time in the third on an RBI single that brought Widener within 3-1.   But Stevenson answered with two in the bottom of the frame, once on a throwing error and again on an RBI double from Ben Hallam for a 5-1 margin.

Senior Dennis Hocker (Coral Springs, FL) homered to lead off the fourth and junior Kyle Summers (Mohnton, PA) added a sacrifice fly in the fourth for a 5-3 margin, but the Pride would get no closer.

Norristown, PA sophomore Robert Barth (2-3) was charged with six runs – four earned – and six hits over five innings with three strikeouts for the Pride (10-15. 5-7).  Sophomore Josh Everett (Harveys Lake, PA) came off the bench to rap two hits.

Greg Myers (6-2) struck out eight, yielding three runs – two earned – and eight hits over seven innings for the Mustangs.  Miller closed with two hits.

Stevenson in game two scored first on Miller's RBI single and doubled the lead in the second on Johnson's run-scoring single.  Widener got one back in the third as Summers crossed home on a double-steal attempt when sophomore Matt Scherer (Havertown, PA) was thrown out at second.

The Mustangs got that run back in the fourth when Johnson got his second RBI on a double down the left-field line for the final.

Noyalis had a single in the third inning and is riding the team's longest hitting streak since Bill Hollingsworth had a 19-game run to start last season.

Scherer and Summers had two hits apiece in game two.  Belford, NJ senior Brandon McCloskey (2-1) permitted three runs – two earned – and six hits over four innings.

Brooks Miller (6-1) allowed one run and six hits over seven innings for Stevenson.  Johnson, Miller and Tom Goulian closed with two hits apiece.

Widener on Wednesday visits Gwynedd-Mercy for a 4:00 pm start in Gwynedd Valley, PA.
