Baseball Cruises to 12-4 Victory at Penn State Berks

(box score)

Michael Riverso (Philadelphia, PA)
rapped three hits and fellow junior Glenn Stanners (Brookhaven, PA) got his first victory for the blue and gold in Widener's 12-4 rout of Penn State Berks in Reading, PA.

Widener wasted little time in jumping to a 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning.  Sophomore Marc Noyalis (Dallas, PA) had an RBI groundout, senior Matt Hone (Newtown, PA) was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded and freshman Pat Rodier (Mount Laurel, NJ) drew a bases-loaded walk.

The Pride (10-12) tacked on another in the second when Riverso lined an RBI single to left for a 4-1 lead.  The visitors got two more in the fourth on another run-scoring groundout for Noyalis and a wild pitch that plated freshman Alec O'Dell (Edgewood, MD) for a 6-2 margin.

The game officially was put on ice when the Pride erupted for four runs in the fifth for a 10-2 cushion.  Junior Kyle Summers (Mohnton, PA) scored on an error, senior Brendan O'Brien (Coatesville, PA) crossed home on a passed ball, Riverso had an RBI single to right and Hone lined a run-scoring single down the left-field line.

It was plenty for Stanners (1-2), who permitted two runs and six hits over six innings for the Pride with three strikeouts.  He only faced eight batters above the minimum and walked just one.

Noyalis had a run-scoring single in the eighth to extend his career-best hitting streak to 13 games and closed with three RBI.  Hone ended with two hits.

Mason Mecke was charged with six runs – four earned – and four hits over four innings with eight walks for Penn State Berks (4-13).  Christian Marcin finished with three hits.

Widener returns to Commonwealth Conference play Friday at home against Stevenson, starting at 3:30 pm.
