Women's Lacrosse Clinches Spot in Conference Tournament With 17-1 Triumph Over Hood

(box score)

Senior Laura Kalbach (Lancaster, PA) scored all four of her goals in the opening half when Widener built a nine-goal lead and clinched its first Commonwealth Conference Tournament berth since 2010 with a 17-1 triumph over Hood at Edith R. Dixon Field.

Kalbach netted her tallies over an eight-minute stretch to start the game and senior Julia Costello (Brookhaven, PA) added the other.  Freshman Caitlyn Mullner (Aston, PA) found the back of the net for the next two and Costello contributed another for an 8-0 lead with 15:59 left in the half.

The Pride owned a 10-1 lead at halftime thanks to a decisive 29-4 shots edge, a 9-3 advantage in draw controls, forcing the Blazers into 15 turnovers and holding the visitors to only 4-of-15 on clear attempts.

Costello ended with three goals and three assists to become the sixth player in school history to reach 200 career points.  She also is seventh with 134 goals and fifth with 66 assists.

Sophomore Mackenzie Lindquist (Ocean City, NJ) again played great with a career-high 11 draw controls, freshman Meghan Garvey (Landenberg, PA) had two goals and an assist with sophomore Megan Dunn (Oxford, PA) needing to make just two saves for the Pride.

"I am happy for the team and especially the seniors with today's result,' Widener coach Julie Mazer said.  "Qualifying for the conference playoffs was a goal we have had since day one.  We came out strong and played well together."

Brigid Ayer scored and Lauren Couch made 23 saves for the Blazers (3-12, 0-8 CC).

Widener (8-8, 3-5) is the fifth seed for the conference tournament and will visit No. 4 seed Lebanon Valley in the first round on Tuesday at 7:00 pm in Annville, PA.  The winner advances to the semifinals against top-seeded Stevenson.
