Pinky Schneider's Goal Propels Women's Lacrosse to Exhilarating 19-18 Win Over Cabrini

(box score)

Sophomore Pinky Schneider (Moorestown, NJ) scored off a great free-position pass from senior Julia Costello (Brookhaven, PA) with 12 seconds left, lifting Widener to a thrilling 19-18 victory over Cabrini at Edith R. Dixon Field.

Widener (6-8) was in a 15-13 hole before it scored three straight for a 16-15 lead, its first cushion since 5-4 with 9:35 left in the first half.  Sophomore Mackenzie Lindquist (Ocean City, NJ) scored to open the run, senior Laura Kalbach (Lancaster, PA) netted a free-position shot and freshman Meghan Garvey (Landenberg, PA) added her own free-position marker with 6:22 remaining.

Nathalie Basunga, who had an exceptional game for the Cavaliers (9-6), picked up a ground ball and ran in unassisted to scored with 4:10 to play for a 16-16 draw.  The Pride got the lead right back with 2:33 to go when junior Amy Albano (Columbia, MD) converted a free-position shot.

Basunga got the draw control, one of 17 she had in the contest, and Cabrini worked the ball around before Christina Pasquariello drew a foul and scored a free-position goal with 1:52 left for 17-17 draw.  Basunga won another draw control and netted a free position tally 21 seconds later for an 18-17 Cavaliers lead.

The next draw control belonged to Lindquist and she took advantage by scoring unassisted with 1:16 to go for an 18-18 tie.

Bree Thompson won the ensuing draw control for Cabrini, which patiently looked for a good shot.  It turned to Katie Lasater, who had her attempt saved by sophomore Megan Dunn (Oxford, PA) with 44 seconds left.

Now it was Widener's chance to take the lead and Costello looked to be the one as she was fouled inside the fan by Erin McLaughlin.  Instead of running in for the shot, Costello found Schneider wide open on the left side for the goal.

Basunga won the final draw control, but Widener's defense cracked down and stopped Lacie Doubet on a scoring chance in the fan as time expired.

Costello had another great game with six goals, marking the fourth time this year she has at least five, Lindquist netted four and Kalbach added three for the Pride.  Lindquist added eight draw controls and Dunn amassed 10 saves.

Basunga could not be blamed for the loss, ending a spectacular night with five goals and three assists.  Lasater had three goals and two assists, Sara Carzo netted three goals and Janel Folkomer made 10 saves.

This marked the third straight year these schools played a one-goal game with Widener taking two of them.

Widener (1-5) returns to action Thursday with a huge Commonwealth Conference game at Alvernia (3-3), starting at 7:00 pm in Reading, PA.
