Baseball Dealt 3-2 Loss at Elizabethtown

(box score)

Widener gave up a run in the bottom of the eighth inning and dropped the rubber game of its three-game Commonwealth Conference set at Elizabethtown, 3-2, to fall into fifth place.

Widener took a 2-0 lead in the top of the fourth as senior Dennis Hocker (Coral Springs, FL) lifted a sacrifice fly and junior Michael Riverso (Philadelphia, PA) scored when a grounder from senior Matt Hone (Newtown, PA) was booted by third baseman Ryan Schamp.

But the Blue Jays leveled things in the bottom of the frame.  Dillon Tagle had a run-scoring double to left center and Luke Gatti added an RBI groundout that plated Aaron Rahn.

Elizabethtown took the lead in the last of the eighth.  Kyle Gable walked, stole second and third before Tagle lined an RBI to single to center.

Widener (16-18, 9-9 CC) was retired in order in the ninth to fall one game behind Messiah (10-8) for the fourth and final conference tournament berth with just one weekend left.  The Pride will need to win at least two games from the Falcons to have any chance of making the tournament.

Blackwood, NJ freshman Joseph Santone (1-1) allowed one run and one hit over 2 1/3 relief innings for the Pride.  Riverso closed with two hits.

Sophomore Marc Noyalis (Dallas, PA) had a hit to extend his latest hitting streak to eight games.  He has a hit in 24 of his last 25 contests, batting .429 (42-for-98), that includes a 16-game run.

Gable and Tagle had two hits apiece.  Rob Cressman (3-2) struck out two over three relief innings for the Blue Jays (15-21, 8-10), who are sixth in the league and would have been eliminated from contention with a loss.

Widener is home Tuesday against Rowan, starting at 3:30 pm.
