Baseball Splits Doubleheader With Elizabethtown

(Game 1) / (Game 2)
Widener hosted a Commonwealth Conference doubleheader against Elizabethtown and won the first game 5-2 before dropping the second 8-6 despite a seventh-inning rally.

Starting pitcher for game one for Widener, Robert Barth (Norristown, PA), shut down the Blue Jays in the top half of the first inning with two consecutive strike outs followed by a pop-up to retire the batters in order. In the bottom half of the same inning, Widener's offense gave Barth a three run lead to work with. With one out down, left fielder Matt Scherer (Havertown, PA) hit a ball to the shortstop and beat it out thanks to a high bounce. The bases became loaded—after shortstop Marc Noyalis (Dallas, PA) singled and Michael Riverso (Philadelphia, PA) walked—for catcher Dennis Hocker (Coral Springs, FL), who singled through the right side to score two. A fielder's choice allowed Riverso to score for the third run.

The top of the second held a few key defensive plays for the Pride. Hocker picked off a runner at first base to give Widener two outs with one runner on. With two outs down, Kevin Berkheiser hit a single through the left side of the infield and Scherer made the throw to Hocker who made the tag on base runner Luke Gatti to save a run and end the inning. Widener added two runs to its score in the bottom of the second. With one out already accounted for, Kyle Summers (Mohnton, PA) walked and advanced to second on a wild pitch thrown by starting pitcher Matt Ruth. A double to right-center hit by Sam Christie (Upper Darby, PA) easily scored Summers, and Christie crossed the plate on a line-drive single to left field hit by Scherer.

Elizabethtown (14-21, 7-10 CC) scored its only two runs in the fourth inning with a two-out, three hit rally. Gatti singled to center and scored on a triple hit by designated hitter Colton King. King scored on a fielding error, unearned.

Noyalis took the mound in the seventh and only allowed three batters to come to the plate for his first career save. Barth (4-3) pitched six innings, gave up seven hits and struck out five of the 27 batters faced for the win. Ruth (4-4) receives the loss after giving up five earned runs on seven hits in 2 1/3 innings pitched.

In game two it was Elizabethtown that scored first with one run on two hits in the first inning. Starting pitcher Nicholas Moeltner (Orefield, PA) gave up four runs in the fourth inning on five consecutive singles, but Widener was able to get two of those runs back in the bottom half of the inning with the help of a one-out single from Summers and a two-out walk from Scherer to put men on first and second with two outs. Noyalis hit a stand-up triple to score both men before a groundout ended the inning.

In the top of the fifth inning the Blue Jays put together three hits to score two more runs and a leadoff double in the sixth went towards another run to give Elizabethtown eight total. Noyalis scored an unearned run in the bottom of the fifth on an RBI double down the left field line hit by Hocker.

Down 8-3 coming into its last at-bats, Widener got a rally started to give itself three runs. Christie led off the inning with a single to left center and executed back-to-back steals to wind up standing on third with no outs. Scherer doubled to left center to easily score Christie, and he scored standing up on a double hit by Noyalis, who advanced to third on a wild pitch thrown by relief pitcher Dylan Manning. Hocker grounded out to shortstop to score Noyalis and designated hitter Matt Hone (Newtown, PA) singled with two outs, but the rally ceased with a fly out to center field.

Starting Blue Jay pitcher Kris Davis recorded his fourth win of the season (4-5). Moeltner (3-5) receives the loss after giving up five earned runs and ten hits in three innings of work.

Widener (16-17, 9-8) will travel to Elizabethtown on Sunday to complete the three game series, beginning at 1:00 pm.  The Pride are one-half game behind Messiah (10-8) for the fourth and final conference-tournament spot.
