Baseball Handed 12-4 Loss By TCNJ

(boxscore)
Widener tied the game twice, but The College of New Jersey scored four runs in two different innings late in the game to give the Pride a 12-4 loss.

The first inning for both teams ended with a foul-out to the first baseman hit by the clean-up batter. TCNJ was first to score with two runs in the top of the second inning on two hits. Starting pitcher for the Pride Shawn Barton (Minersville, PA) gave up a four-pitch walk to the first batter of the inning and, after a lineout and a groundout, first baseman Justin Ely hit a double to the right-field fence to score the first run. Ely scored on a hit through the middle by the next batter before Widener got itself out of the inning.

In the bottom half of the inning, Widener's Michael Riverso (Philadelphia, PA) reached third after leading off the inning by reaching on an error and advancing on a sacrifice bunt and a groundout, but the inning ended before he could cross the plate.

In the third inning the Pride (9-12) kept the Lions from scoring and had two hits to score two runs in the bottom half to tie the game 2-2. With two outs away, shortstop Matt Scherer (Havertown, PA) was hit by a pitch and advanced to second on a wild pitch thrown by starter Evan Edelman, which allowed him to score easily on a double to the warning track hit by freshman outfielder Alec O'Dell (Edgewood, MD). O'Dell scored on a single through the left-side of the infield hit by sophomore Marc Noyalis (Dallas, PA), which extended his hitting streak to 12 games.

TCNJ (9-9) added two more runs to its line with an unearned run in the fourth inning and a long home run to right field hit by designated hitter Pat Roberts in the fifth.

To tie the game once again, Widener scored two more runs in the bottom of the fifth. Center fielder Sam Christie (Upper Darby, PA) led the inning off with a single through the right side and scored from first on a Noyalis double, his fifth of the season. He scored standing up on a single hit by Riverso, who was thrown out at second by the cut-off man.

In the sixth inning, TCNJ scored four runs on one hit with the help of a bases loaded throwing error on a pick-off attempt. The lions added four more in the top of the ninth inning on three hits -- a double and two singles -- and one throwing error.

Widener in the sixth, eighth and ninth innings had its batters retired in order.  Second baseman Kyle Summers (Mohnton, PA) was the only batter to reach base in the seventh inning with an infield single.

Edelman (1-0) pitched eight innings, struck out four and gave up four earned runs on seven hits for his first collegiate win. Peter Pulhac (Bordentown, NJ) received the loss after pitching two innings of relief and giving up five runs -- two earned.

Christie and Noyalis each ended the game hitting 2-for-4 and scored once, with Noyalis getting two RBI to give him 15 on the season.

Widener returns to the diamond Wednesday as it travels to Reading, PA to take on Penn State Berks, beginning at 3:30 pm.
