Women's Lacrosse Dealt Excruciating 14-13 Double OT Loss by Albright

(box score)

Widener valiantly fought back to score the final three goals of regulation, but gave up a goal 11 seconds into the second overtime for tough 14-13 Commonwealth Conference loss to Albright at Edith R. Dixon Field.

Erin Farrell scored the last of her back-to-back goals with 4:25 left to give the Lady Lions what they seemed to be a comfortable 12-9 lead.

But Widener was not done as senior Julia Costello (Brookhaven, PA) scored on a free-position shot with 3:47 remaining for a 12-10 game.  Costello then was on the spot again as she took a charge from Brianna McCormick with 1:53 left in the Pride's offensive zone.  On the re-start, she then took the ball and fed senior Laura Kalbach (Lancaster, PA) for a goal six seconds later and a 12-11 contest.

Costello then forced another turnover with under a minute left and things got real interesting.  Freshman Meghan Garvey (Landenberg, PA) fired a shot that clanked off the post, but Kalbach got the rebound and tallied with 43 seconds left for a 12-12 draw.

Albright got the initial chance in the first half of the six-minute overtime and Meghan Wilson delivered, scoring exactly a minute in for a 13-12 game.  Sophomore Mackenzie Lindquist (Ocean City, NJ) won the draw control in the second half and Kalbach netted a free-position marker with 2:13 to play for a 13-13 tie.

The teams were held off the board the rest of the period before the start of double overtime, the first sudden-death stanza.  Amanda Smith capped her red-hot game for the Lady Lions by winning the draw control, sprinting toward the cage and scoring for the win.

Kalbach had three goals and an assist with Garvey and Lindquist each getting three goals for the Pride (5-7, 1-4 CC).  Costello got two goals and three assists, Pinky Schneider (Moorestown, PA) amassed two and one with fellow sophomore Megan Dunn (Oxford, PA) making six saves.

Smith ended with six goals and eight draw controls, Farrell scored five times with Emily Hutson making seven saves for Albright (9-4, 3-3).

Widener hits the road Saturday to visit Stevenson for a 1:00 pm start in Owings Mills, MD.
