Baseball Drops Wild 20-15 Contest at No. 5 Johns Hopkins

(box score)

Widener certainly gave fifth-ranked Johns Hopkins a battle, but in the end was handed a wild 20-15 loss in Baltimore, MD.

The Blue Jays (27-2) thought it had complete control with an eight-run fifth inning for a 13-5 lead.  The inning was highlighted by a two-run homer from Chris Wilhelm, a three-run long ball from Jeff Lynch and consecutive RBI from Jonathan Hettleman, Christopher Casey and Adam Weiner.

Widener (14-16) made things interesting in the seventh when it scored four times to close to 16-11.  Junior Sam Christie (Upper Darby, PA) and senior Dennis Hocker (Coral Springs, FL) each had RBI singles in the inning, sophomore Marc Noyalis (Dallas, PA) lifted a sacrifice fly and senior Brendan O'Brien (Coatesville, PA) had a run-scoring groundout.

The Blue Jays got one back in the bottom of the frame, but the Pride scored four more in the eighth for a 17-15 deficit.  Junior Kyle Summers (Mohnton, PA) and Christie each had RBI singles in the inning and Noyalis continued his torrid play with a two-run single.

But Johns Hopkins gave itself some breathing room with three runs in the last of the eighth for the final.  Lynch blasted his second home run, a two-run shot, and Wilhelm stole home.

Noyalis notched his second four-hit game of the season and first five-RBI effort of his career.  Hocker rapped four hits for the second time in his career and first since March 12, 2011 against Lyndon State.  Christie totaled three hits as part of Widener's 21-hit attack.

Belford, NJ senior Brandon McCloskey (2-2) was saddled with the loss after yielding eight earned runs and eight hits over 3 1/3 innings.

Lynch ended with three hits and five RBI, Wilhelm had four hits and three RBI with Ryan Zakszeski and Chris Vonderschmidt each getting three hits for the Blue Jays.  Zach Augustine fired a scoreless inning for the win.

Widener is home Wednesday against Penn State Abington, starting at 3:30 pm.
