Baseball Wins Two To Sweep Series Against Albright

(Game 1) / (Game 2)
After winning game one of the series on Saturday, Widener traveled to Reading, PA today to complete the Commonwealth Conference set with Albright, winning the first just 1-0 before taking the second 12-6 for a three-game sweep.

Senior catcher Dennis Hocker (Coral Springs, FL) got the first hit of the game in the top of the second inning with a single up the middle and advanced to second on a fielder's choice. With Hocker in scoring position, the inning ended on a line drive double play to the third baseman Zac Okonski. In the bottom half of the inning, Albright had two hits to put men on first and third with only one out, but shortstop Marc Noyalis (Dallas, PA) and second baseman Kyle Summers (Mohnton, PA) turned a 6-4-3 double play to get out of the inning unscathed.

In the fourth inning the Pride scored the only run of the game, sparked by a lead-off double to right field hit by Noyalis. A groundout allowed Noyalis to advance to third base, which put him in position to score on a wild pitch thrown by starting pitcher Alex Myers before a fly-out ended the inning.

Over the course of the next three innings Widener had two hits and Albright had just one.

Senior Nicholas Moeltner (Orefield, PA) pitched the full seven innings and received the win, giving up just four hits and striking out seven. Myers was saddled with the loss, giving up four hits and one earned run over seven innings and striking out four.

Today's second game showed more offense for both teams, as Widener totaled 14 hits and Albright had 11.

Widener (14-15, 8-7 CC) got on the board right away with four runs in the first and one in the second. Sam Christie (Upper Darby, PA) led off the game with a walk and stole second base before a Noyalis single advanced him to third. After stealing second base, Noyalis advanced to third on a single hit by Michael Riverso (Philadelphia, PA), which scored Christie. With two men on Hocker hit his third homerun of the season.

Christie led off the second inning, this time with a double, and stole third base to put him in position to tag up on a sacrifice fly to centerfield hit by Noyalis to give Widener a five run cushion.

Between the fifth and sixth innings Widener tacked on seven runs. In the fifth inning Riverso reached on a fielder's choice and advanced to second on a single hit by Hocker. Designated hitter Jake Tackett (Collingswood, NJ) doubled to score both men, and he scored on a sacrifice fly hit by Alec O'Dell (Edgewood, MD) after advancing to third on a single from Brendan O'Brien (Coatesville, PA).

Christie led off the sixth inning with a walk and stole second before being advanced to third by a single hit by Summers, who also stole second base. Both men scored on a single hit by Riverso, who was brought home with the help of a single hit by Joseph Santone (Blackwood, NJ). Hocker reached first on a walk, advanced to third on Santone's hit and scored on an O'Dell single before a pop-out ended the inning.

Albright (11-15, 3-11) scored two runs in each the third, fifth and sixth innings with eight hits between the three innings, but it was not enough to keep the Pride from clinching the sweep.

Colin Weiss (Red Hill, PA) was credited with the win after pitching 4 2/3 innings, giving up four runs -- three earned -- on eight hits and striking out four with one walk. The loss went to Doug Franks, who pitched 4 1/3 innings and gave up six earned runs on six hits, walked three and struck out four.

Between the two games, Noyalis went 4-for-7 at the plate with two runs scored and two RBI. Hocker hit 3-for-6 with one walk, crossed the plate three times and brought in three runs, with Riverso also scoring three times and totaling three RBIs. Christie ended the day going 2-for-6 with three runs scored and two walks.

Widener will travel to Baltimore, MD on Monday to take on Johns Hopkins, beginning at 3:30 pm.
