Women’s Lacrosse Dominates Eastern For 20-9 Victory; Costello Reaches 100 Career Goals

(boxscore)
Widener scored 10 goals in each half and senior Julia Costello (Brookhaven, PA) netted eight to reach 100 for her career in the Pride's 20-9 victory over Eastern at Edith R. Dixon Field.

Eastern got ahead of Widener right from the start with three goals in the first five minutes, with two coming from Victoria Graham. It did not take long for Widener (2-0) to find its groove, scoring the next eight goals over a 13-minute timeframe. Sophomore Mackenzie Lindquist (Ocean City, NJ) ignited the scoring for the Pride at the 22-minute mark after receiving a feed from Costello, who then turned around and scored a goal of her own just over a minute later. A free-position shot from sophomore Melissa Sailey (Swedesboro, NJ) at 18 minutes tied the game at 3-3.

Halfway through the first period, Costello scored her second goal and blasted another past Eagle goalkeeper Cortney Andes on a free-position shot with seven minutes left. With just 30 seconds left in the half, Costello scored an unassisted goal to give the Pride a 10-5 edge going into halftime.

Widener's momentum continued in the second half with a goal right from the start from senior Laura Kalbach (Lancaster, PA). Costello fed freshman Meghan Garvey (Landenberg, PA) a goal and senior Lauren Staedt (Drexel Hill, PA) gave Widener a 13-6 lead with a successful free-position attempt.

Julia Furniss broke up the Pride's scoring pattern with a goal at the 24th minute, but Lindquist quickly turned it around with her third of four goals less than 30 seconds later to start a 6-0 scoring run over the next 13 minutes. In that block of time, Costello scored three goals, Lindquist had two and Staedt netted her second goal with Garvey, Costello and Pinky Schneider (Moorestown, NJ) all getting assists.

Costello scored her final goal of the game with 25 seconds remaining, to give her 100 career.  Her eight goals is tied for the third most in school history and she becomes the first to do this since Jackie Elliott on April 21, 2009 vs. Arcadia.  Her 11 points also is tied for third most in Widener annals and she is the first to reach this since Rachel Porter vs. Lycoming on April 14, 2012.

Costello stands at 152 points, which moves her into Widener's career top 10 list.

As a team, Widener netted 20-of-38 shots for a .526 shot percentage and had six fewer turnovers than Eastern (0-3). Sophomore Megan Dunn (Oxford, PA) played the full 60 minutes between the posts and made five saves.

Widener will hit the road Wednesday to take on Ursinus, beginning at 7:00 pm.
