Women's Lacrosse Posts Another 18-6 Win, This Time Over Bryn Mawr

(box score)

Widener put up 12 goals in the opening half and was never headed en route to a convincing 18-6 triumph over Bryn Mawr at Edith R. Dixon Field.

It was all Pride (4-3) from the outset as they tallied the first 11 goals in just over 21 1/2 minutes.  Senior Julia Costello (Brookhaven, PA), freshman Meghan Garvey (Landenberg, PA) and sophomore Pinky Schneider (Moorestown, NJ) all scored twice in that span.

Garvey completed her first collegiate hat trick with 58 seconds to go in the half for the Pride, who opened a 12-1 halftime lead thanks to a 17-7 shots advantage.  The defense also did its job as the Owls were only 3-of-8 in clears in the half and committed 11 turnovers.

Costello, Schneider and sophomore Megan Granata (Broomall, PA) also had hat tricks and Costello posted three assists for the Pride, who amassed a 25-17 shots advantage.  Granata totaled four draw controls and sophomore Megan Dunn (Oxford, PA) recorded eight saves.

Kathleen Magner had three goals and six draw controls, Georgina Dominique also scored three times and Grace Baelen-King made three saves for the Owls (2-5).

"I felt like we had a strong start," Widener coach Julie Mazer said.  "We worked on our shooting and our shooting percentage was up tonight.  I think we did many things well and we will be preparing for our conference opener."

Oddly enough, this marks the second time in the 35-year history of the program the squad has won consecutive games by the same score.  Widener notched a 16-8 win over Eastern on April 1, 1995 and Philadelphia Textile three days later.

The Pride entered tonight following an 18-6 win Saturday at Gwynedd-Mercy.

Widener opens Commonwealth Conference play Thursday at Messiah, starting at 4:00 pm.
