Baseball Dealt 6-4 Loss at Swarthmore

(box score)

Widener succumbed to a four-run fifth inning by Swarthmore and left with a 6-4 setback in Swarthmore, PA.

Widener grabbed a 1-0 lead in the top of the fourth when Alec O'Dell (Edgewood, MD) continued his impressive freshman campaign with an RBI single.  Swarthmore leveled things in the bottom of the frame when Joe Rizzo singled and Rory McTear scored on an error.

Swarthmore then took control in the fifth for a 5-1 lead.  Nicko Burnett lifted a sacrifice fly, Rizzo had an RBI double down the left-field line and Scoop Ruxin laced a two-run single.

The Pride (8-9) got two back in the sixth on O'Dell's RBI double and a run-scoring single from junior Michael Riverso (Philadelphia, PA) to make it 5-3.  Junior Sam Christie (Upper Darby, PA) crossed home on an error in the seventh for a 5-4 deficit, but Widener would get no closer.

Sophomore Marc Noyalis (Dallas, PA) had a double to extend his career-best and team-season-high hitting streak to eight games.  Junior Peter Pulhac (Bordentown, NJ) allowed one run and four hits over four innings before Doylestown, PA freshman Craig Lager (0-1) permitted four runs and three hits over 2/3 of an inning.

Rizzo, Ruxin and Cody Ruben all had two hits for the Garnet (10-6).  Nathan Booth (2-0) gave up three runs – two earned – and four hits over five relief innings.

Widener on Thursday hits the road to visit Alvernia at 3:30 pm in Reading, PA.  The two are tied for second place in the Commonwealth Conference at 4-2.
