Huge Run Propels Women's Lacrosse to 18-6 Rout at Gwynedd-Mercy

(box score)

Senior Julia Costello (Brookhaven, PA) and sophomore Melissa Sailey (Swedesboro, NJ) each scored three times during an 11-goal run that bridged both halves, lifting Widener to an 18-6 win at Gwynedd-Mercy in Gwynedd Valley, PA.

Widener held a 7-5 lead with just two minutes left in the opening half before it really took control.  Senior Laura Kalbach (Lancaster, PA) tallied with 1:57 left and Sailey scored twice in the last minute for the Pride, who owned a 10-5 halftime cushion.

The second half was all Widener (3-3) as it netted the first eight goals.  Freshman Caitlyn Mullner (Aston, PA), junior Amy Albano (Columbia, MD) and Costello scored in the first five minutes to give the Pride a 13-5 lead.  Sailey, Costello and sophomore Megan Granata (Broomall, PA) all tallied in a 64-second span to give Widener a 16-5 cushion with 20:17 left.

Costello and freshman Megan Mills (Riverton, NJ) also scored in that span for the Pride, who finished with a 44-18 shots edge that included an eye-popping 28-10 in the first half.  Widener also forced Gwynedd-Mercy into 28 turnovers.

Costello had five goals and three assists, moving her into a tie with Jackie Elliott (2008-11) for eighth in school history with 51 assists.  This came one year after Costello had six goals and two assists against Gwynedd-Mercy for another eight-point game.

Sailey and Kalbach each had three goals and an assist with sophomore Mackenzie Lindquist (Ocean City, NJ) getting four draw controls and Kalbach three.  Sophomore Megan Dunn (Oxford, PA) only needed to make three saves for the Pride.

“I'm really proud of the team,” Widener coach Julie Mazer said.  “Gwynedd-Mercy came out strong and it took a couple of minutes for us to adjust.  Once we got started, we played very well as a team.  We were able to execute, we played very well and we're looking forward to our next game.”

Danae Perrymond scored four goals and Marina Hubbard made 16 saves for the Griffins (2-3).

Widener is home Tuesday against Bryn Mawr, starting at 7:00 pm.
