Women’s Lacrosse Wins Season Opener 16-10 Over Arcadia

Widener scored eight goals in each half and put forth a solid defense to be victorious in its season opener against Arcadia, 16-10, at Edith R. Dixon Field.
 
Arcadia (0-2) scored the first goal of the game six minutes in when Jaclyn Feffer put one past Pride keeper Megan Dunn (Oxford, PA). In the next three minutes, senior Laura Kalbach (Lancaster, PA) put Widener (1-0) in the lead with two goals—her first of six in the game. Mackenzie Lindquist (Ocean City, NJ) gave the Pride another goal before Dawn Garanetta made one for the Knights. Before the half time break, Kalbach netted three more goals, with Lauren Staedt (Drexel Hill, PA) and Pinky Schneider (Moorestown, NJ) each getting one of their own. Garanetta scored with one minute left on the clock to send the game into the break with a score of 8-3, Widener.
 
Freshman Meghan Garvey (Landenberg, PA) sped past the Knight's defense to put the ball past goalkeeper Jordan Dunacusky to start off the second half, and was matched with Garanetta's final goal of the game. Garvey and Lindquist teamed up for a goal apiece one minute apart with 20 minutes remaining in regulation.
 
The Knights started creeping back up on the scoreboard, and with 10 minutes remaining Haylee Molloy made her third consecutive goal to bring the score to a four point margin, but Kalbach and Lindquist each made a shot about one minute apart to stretch the Pride's lead. Senior Julia Costello (Brookhaven, PA) made the final goal of the game with three seconds left to make the final score 16-10, Widener.
 
Garvey picked up four draw controls, with Lindquist and Costello each getting three. Kalbach ended the game making six-of-nine shots and Schneider made three-of-five. Dunn allowed ten goals and made six saves between the posts.
 
For Arcadia, Molloy netted four goals on six shots and Garanetta ended with a .500 shot percentage and four draw controls. Feffer won six draw controls to go with two goals on two shots.
 
Widener is home again next Saturday, March 9 to take on Eastern beginning at noon.
