Baseball Wins Home Opener, 6-2, Over Rutgers-Camden

(box score)
Widener strung together four runs in the third inning and two in the eighth to win 6-2 in its home opener against Rutgers-Camden today in Chester, PA.

The game remained scoreless until in the bottom of the third inning when Widener strung together four hits for four runs. With one out, senior catcher Dennis Hocker (Coral Springs, FL) hit a line drive single to left field and advanced to second on a wild pitch by starting pitcher Dashon Jones. With two outs, fellow senior and captain Matt Hone (Newtown, PA) hit a clutch triple into the right field corner that was just missed by diving right fielder Adrian Gonzalez to give the Pride their first run of the game with Hocker standing up at home. Hone took advantage of another wild pitch thrown by Jones, sliding in safe at home.

With two outs and two runs on the board, designated hitter Michael Riverso (Philadelphia, PA) hit a hard ground ball that hit off of Jones towards shortstop Joe Sigismondi, but he could not make the throw in time and Riverso legged out an infield single. A passed ball allowed Riverso to take second base before Pride shortstop Matt Scherer (Havertown, PA) and second baseman Kyle Summers (Mohnton, PA) both drew walks and forced a pitching change for the Scarlet Raptors. Senior Adam Satanoff came in to throw relief and gave up a single through the right side to Sam Christie (Upper Darby, PA) that scored both Riverso and Scherer. The inning ended with a pick off at second base. Jones's final line read 2 2/3 innings, five hits, four earned runs, three strike outs, two wild pitches and one hit batter.

Starting pitcher for the Pride, Shawn Barton (Minersville, PA), did not allow a run until the top of the sixth inning when he started off with a four-pitch walk to Donnie Haines. Haines scored on a double to deep left center on a full count by second baseman George Spingler. Freshman Craig Lager (Doylestown, PA) stepped in to take over the mound with no outs, giving up one single before getting a pop-out to Summers and a 5-4-3 double play to end the inning. Barton's final line read five hits, one run, one walk, two strike outs and three hit batters over five innings and 24 batters faced.

In the top of the seventh the lead-off man for Rutgers-Camden, Albert Rivera, hit a single through the left side and was moved to third on a double down the left-field line by left-handed batter Bruce Monro, who had grounded out to second base in his first three at-bats. Junior Colin Weiss (Red Hill, PA) was brought into the game and pitched a sacrifice fly to left field to his first batter faced, which brought across the Scarlet Raptors' second and final run before grounding out to Summers and striking out to end the inning.

With the game within striking distance for Rutgers-Camden, Widener (3-6) put two more runs on the board in the bottom of the eighth inning to give itself some breathing room. With one out, Riverso got hit by a pitch with two strikes on him, and scored on a triple to left-center hit by Scherer. Scherer scored easily when Summers hit a single through the right side of the infield, which was playing up to try to prevent the run from scoring. Widener still posed a scoring threat with the bases loaded and two outs after senior Brendan O'Brien (Coatesville, PA) and freshman Alec O'Dell (Edgewood, MD) each reached on fielding errors, but pitcher Satanoff threw a full-count strikeout to get out of the inning.

First baseman Marc Noyalis (Dallas, PA) moved to the mound and Riverso took over at first for the top of the ninth. After giving up a base on balls, Noyalis struck out Gonzalez looking. For the second out, Scherer and Summers teamed up for an out at second and Noyalis closed out the game with another strike out.

Barton (1-1) was credited with the win and Jones (0-2) was saddled with the loss. Riverso went 1-for-2 at the plate and Scherer hit 2-for-3, both crossed the plate two times. Both Widener and Rutgers-Camden (4-3) had eight hits, but the Scarlet Raptors committed four more errors.

Widener is home this Friday for its first Commonwealth Conference contest against Lebanon Valley beginning at 3:30 pm.
