Men's and Women's Swimming Each Go 2-1 at Messiah Quad-Meet

Widener's men and women's swimming teams each finished 2-1 at the Messiah Quad-Meet, where they faced off against Hood, FDU-Florham and host Messiah in Grantham, PA.

The men defeated FDU-Florham 168-29 and Messiah 103-101, but lost 108-96 to Hood.

Ian Gaynor (Donegal, Ireland) won the 50-yard-freestyle in 21.30 second and fellow freshman Jeremy Lahn (Philadelphia, PA) finished fourth in 23.58 seconds. Gaynor then returned to win the 100-yard freestyle in 47.04 seconds, defeating the next closest swimmer by over three seconds.

Senior captain Michael Lawley (Philadelphia, PA) came through to win the 100-yard backstroke in 55.52 seconds. In the 100-yard breaststroke, sophomore Andy Madore (State College, PA) and freshman Sawyer Allen (Lehighton, PA) finished third and fourth, respectively.

In the 100-yard butterfly, sophomore Stephen Ranalli (Wildwood, NJ) swam to a third-place finish in 57.18 seconds and Allen finished fifth in 58.73 seconds.

The 400-yard freestyle relay team of Gaynor, Lawley, Lahn and freshman Jeffrey Hicks (White Haven, PA) won by over seven seconds in 3:18.80.

The women defeated FDU-Florham 166-18 and Hood 103-101, but lost 142-62 to Messiah.

Senior standout Sara Leonelli (Vineland, NJ) won the 200-yard freestyle in 2:03.63 and freshman Melaney Heald (Georgetown, DE) finished fifth in 2:07.62.

All-American senior Laura Harris (Phoenix, MD) won the 500-yard freestyle in 5:18.66 beating the next closest opponent by 14 seconds. In the 50-yard freestyle, sophomore Annie Walker (New Castle, DE) touched the wall third in 26.86 seconds.

Freshman newcomer Erin Neugebauer (Eden Prairie, MN) placed third in the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:16.33 as senior teammate Kerry McIntyre (Wilmington, DE) place fifth in 1:17.85.

The 200-yard medley relay consisting of Walker, Harris, and seniors Carly Wray (Ocean View, NJ) and Jennifer Barkofski (Norristown, PA) placed second in 1:56.34. Also finishing second was the 400-yard freestyle relay of Leonelli, Barkofski, Wray and Harris in 3:50.75.

The Pride return to action at the Franklin & Marshall Invitational on November 22, beginning at 6:30, and continuing throughout the weekend.
