No. 25 Women’s Basketball Handed 73-58 Loss at Cabrini

(box score)

Despite seniors Jen Egee (Ridley Park, PA) and Joanna Persiano (Ventnor, NJ) as well as junior Ally Ferrucci (Vineland, NJ) all scoring in double figures, 25th-ranked Widener could not overcome a strong first half from Cabrini for a 73-58 loss in Radnor, PA.

Cabrini (3-1) in the first half shot 45 percent (13-of-29) from the field and gained a 25-18 rebounding edge to open a 36-26 lead. Even with Egee scoring nine points in the half, Widener shot only 30 percent (8-of-27) from the field.

The Pride (2-1) hung around most of the second half, closing to 58-49 with 6:13 remaining on Ferrucci's two free throws. But the Cavaliers scored the next nine points, including four from Brittany Sandone, to grab their biggest cushion at 67-49 with 3:54 to play.

Egee poured in 17 points in playing all 40 minutes and was 10-for-10 from the line, giving her double figures in points all three games this season. The same regarding every contest in the young campaign can be said for Ferrucci, who netted 15 points in playing the entire game and was 8-for-10 from the charity stripe.

Persiano amassed 12 points for Widener, which shot 33 percent (16-of-49) from the field overall. Junior Courtney Colella (Cinnaminson, NJ) closed with nine points and seven rebounds.

Sandone ended with 19 points, Annie Rivituso netted 15 points and Megan Decker had 13 and 10 rebounds for Cabrini, which shot 45 percent (25-of-56) from the field.

The Pride earlier this week learned they were ranked in the USA Today WBCA Top 25 Coaches Poll.

Widener is home Tuesday against Albright in both teams Commonwealth Conference opener, starting at 7:00 pm.
