Women's Soccer's Undefeated Streak Ends With 3-1 Defeat From Stevenson

(box score)

The 13th game of the season proved to be unlucky for Widener as the 12-game undefeated streak came to an end with a 3-1 Commonwealth Conference loss to Stevenson in Owings Mills, MD.

Widener (11-1-1, 1-1 CC) had the best start in the history of the program along with 11 straight wins and breaking the longest undefeated streak set back in 1995 and 2010. During that streak, the Pride completed nine shutouts and outscored their opponents 23-4.

Widener entered the game ranked seventh in the NSCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional Rankings and received votes in the D3Soccer.com Top 25 Poll.

It was Stevenson (9-4, 2-0) that scored first off an unassisted shot from Jordan Porretto in the 30th minute. Porretto received a ball off a Widener deflection and fired the ball into the left corner of the net.

Nine minutes later, Widener evened the score at 1-1 before halftime. Senior forward Karen Thomas (Mullica Hill, NJ), recently named the conference and ECAC Player of the Week, passed the ball to junior Jenna Pedrick (Sicklerville, NJ) in front of the net. Pedrick beat a defender, curved a shot around goaltender Annie McCoach and scored her fifth goal of the season.

Two minutes into the second half, Stevenson's Mackenzie Calhoun scored off a pass from teammate Meaghan Williams. In the 53rd minute. Catherine Madden secured the victory, scoring off a give-and-go pass from inside the box.

Senior Valarie Perretti (Clayton, NJ) after being named ECAC and Commonwealth Conference Goalkeeper of the Week, finished with six saves.

Widener will travel to PPL Park, home of the Philadelphia Union, on Friday to host Lycoming at 5:00 pm. The men's contest against the Warriors begins at 7:30 pm.
