Karen Thomas Stays on Hot Streak With Two More Goals in Women's Soccer's Victory Over Alvernia

(box score) / (video highlights)

The incomparable Karen Thomas (Mullica Hill, NJ) continued her standout senior campaign with two more goals as Widener extended its school-record streaks with a 2-0 Commonwealth Conference win over Alvernia at Leslie C. Quick Jr. Stadium.

Widener (11-0-1, 1-0 CC), ranked seventh in the NSCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional Rankings, in the first half was on the wrong end of a 7-4 shots edge and went into the locker room scoreless. Part of the reason for the tie was senior goalkeeper Valarie Perretti (Clayton, PA), who made six saves over the first 45 minutes.

Then it was Thomas' turn in the spotlight, first in the 66th minute. Junior Jenna Pedrick (Sicklerville, NJ) launched a corner kick that Thomas was right there for the header and a 1-0 Pride lead.

The two connected again on an insurance goal in the 87th minute to close the scoring. Pedrick dribbled down the left side and found Thomas inside the box. Thomas then beat her defender, took a shot that went off the hands of goalkeeper Colleen Maher and spun in for her team-leading 11th goal of the season.

The 11 goals is two shy of cracking the school's single-season top five. Thomas now has 22 goals and 55 points in her career.

Perretti closed with nine saves for her eighth shutout of the season. The Pride now have nine shutouts as a team, two shy of the school record of 11 set in 2008.

Maher ended with seven saves and Kelsey Gill had five shots for the Crusaders (8-3-1, 0-1).

Widener is on the road Wednesday at Stevenson, starting at 7:00 pm.
