Field Hockey Handed 6-1 Loss at No. 13 Messiah

(box score)

Widener ran into a solid unit in 13th-ranked Messiah and was dealt a 6-1 Commonwealth Conference loss in Grantham, PA.

Messiah wasted little time gaining a 1-0 lead as Celina Nissley in the fifth minute scored thanks to an assist from Gina Kellett. Kellett then took her turn in the 22nd minute, scoring her second goal of the season for a 2-0 Falcons cushion.

Widener got a much-needed goal with 5:33 left in the first half as senior Samantha Balonis (Northumberland, PA) scored for a 2-1 deficit. It was her fourth goal of the season and 12th career.

The Pride looked to put on the defensive clamps in the second half, but it was the Falcons who scored in the 43rd minute as Nissley put her second of the contest in the back of the cage.

Jennie Kamel then scored twice and Rachel Cox added one for the Falcons (7-2, 2-0 CC), who closed with a 32-6 shots edge. Kellett had seven shots and Angela Klaczak made one save.

Freshman Dana Adamson (Warrington, PA) and sophomore Meghan Garvey (Avondale, PA) had two shots apiece and junior Maggie Karmeris (Wilmington, DE) totaled a career-best 14 saves for the Pride (4-7, 0-2). Her previous best was 12 at Alvernia on October 25, 2011.

Widener returns home Wednesday against Arcadia on "Stick it to Cancer Night." Game time is 7:00 pm. Fans are asked to wear pink to show their support and donations will be accepted for the Susan Reiley Memorial Fund.
