Swimming Falls at Scranton

Going against some tough competition, Widener more than held its own as the men were dealt a 151-111 loss by Scranton and the women were handed a 147.5-114.5 setback in Scranton, PA.


Ian Gaynor (Donegal, Ireland) continued his standout freshman season by winning the 50-yard freestyle in 21.17 seconds to break the 15-year-old school record. He also took the 100-yard freestyle in 47.61 seconds and helped the 400-yard freestyle relay team win in 3:20.23 that included junior Andrew Olchowecky (Philadelphia, PA), senior Michael Lawley (Philadelphia, PA) and freshman Jeremy Lahn (Philadelphia, PA).

Lawley had two individual wins of his own, grabbing the 100-yard backstroke in 55.02 seconds and the 200-yard backstroke in 2:08.20. Freshman Michael Grajek (Freehold, NJ) won the 500-yard freestyle in 5:16.99.

Senior All-America Laura Harris (Phoenix, MD) took the 200-yard freestyle in 1:58.39 and the 100-yard butterfly in 1:00.73. She also was part of the winning 200-yard medley relay squad that ended in 1:55.88 and was comprised of sophomore Annie Walker (New Castle, DE), Sara Leonelli (Vineland, NJ) and fellow senior Carly Wray (Ocean View, NJ).

Senior Colleen Tighe (Linwood, NJ) won the 500-yard freestyle in 5:35.53 and the 1,000-yard freestyle in 11:17.58. Leonelli took the 100-yard freestyle in 57.62 and senior Jennifer Barkofski (Norristown, PA) captured the 200-yard IM in 2:22.13.

Widener is on the road Wednesday at Swarthmore as part of the "320 Challenge." The meet begins at 6:30 pm.
