Field Hockey Falls to Albright, 3-1, in Conference Play

(box score) / (video highlights)

Sophomore midfielder Ashley Aires (Bayville, NJ) scored the first goal of her career, but Widener fell to Albright 3-1 in Commonwealth Conference play at Edith R. Dixon Field.

Widener (4-9, 0-4 CC) came out full of energy onto the home turf and dominated the first minutes of the game.

On Albright's first opportunity in the Widener zone, Amanda Smith gave the Lady Lions the 1-0 lead in the eighth minute.

The Pride continued to pressure after time expired in the first half on a penalty corner and the hard work finally paid off. Senior forward Devon Biglin (Ocean City, NJ) took a penalty corner and found Aires a foot inside the circle. Aires fired a shot at knee height that deflected off an Albright defender and snuck into the left corner past goaltender Marguerite DeLucas.

In the second half, Albright regained the lead off a scramble in front of the Widener goal. Amanda Smith was able to pick up the loose ball and pass it to Mackenzie Faight a yard out from the net in the 41st minute of play.

With the clock winding down Albright was awarded a penalty corner. Faight passed the ball to Chelsea Klein. Klein dribbled the ball into the circle and struck a ball that went to the bottom right corner of the goal.

Junior goalkeeper Maggie Karmeris (Wilmington, DE) made three saves on the day and senior captain Hannah Dinsmore (Wayne, PA) controlled the back line and added a defensive save to her credit.

Widener will next travel on Tuesday to Lebanon Valley to take on the Flying Dutchmen at 6:00 pm.
