Men's Basketball Handed 77-71 Loss at Stevenson

Widener forged its way back against Stevenson in a key Commonwealth Conference match-up, only to be dealt a 77-71 loss in Owings Mills, MD.
 
Down 64-57 with 6:11 left, Widener scored seven straight points to forge a 64-64 tie with 4:12 remaining.  Freshman David Nicholson (Odenton, MD) hit a 3-pointer in that span and junior Bob Makor (Philadelphia, PA) ended it on a jumper.
 
Stevenson, however, netted the next six points to gain a 70-64 margin with 3:05 remaining.  The Mustangs got three layups in the run with Tyson Jacobs capping the burst.
 
The margin would not fluctuate much until the Pride scored four points in 12 seconds to close to 73-69 with 25 seconds remaining on Makor's layup.  But Christian Roberts hit four straight free throws for the Mustangs to give the home team a 77-69 lead with 17 seconds left.
 
Junior Rodney Brown (Lake Valley, NJ) scored 20 points and was 9-for-9 from the line to go with eight rebounds, Nicholson poured in 19 points on 7-of-10 shooting, Makor netted 10 points and sophomore Greg Lawson (Mount Holly, NJ) hauled in 13 rebounds for the Pride (5-15, 4-9 CC).
 
Widener, which gained a 37-15 edge in bench scoring, shot 42 percent (15-of-36) from the field in the second half and 40 percent (24-of-60) overall.
 
Alfonzo Hawkins scored 24 points on 9-of-17 shooting with Roberts and Tyrus Costly adding 14 apiece for the Mustangs (12-8, 5-8), who shot 13-of-30 from the field in each half for 43 percent.
 
Widener is home Saturday to face Hood at 3:00 pm.  Donations will be accepted during the contest for the Kay Yow Cancer Fund in hopes of finding a cure for breast cancer.
