Swimming Defeats Cabrini At Home

Widener's men's and women's swimming teams hosted Cabrini today and left no doubt in their victories, with the men winning 107-61 and the women victorious 115-59 at Schwartz Center.
 
The meet started out with the 200-yard medley relays. The women's 'B' squad, consisting of Annie Walker (New Castle, DE), Sara Leonelli (Vineland, NJ), Rachel Lewinson (West Windsor, NJ) and Kelsey Lake (Ijamsville, MD), took first in 1:59.11 and the men's squad— Michael Lawley (Philadelphia, PA), Andy Madore (State College, PA) , Stephen Ranalli (Wildwood, NJ) and Andrew Olchowecky—followed suit, taking first in 1:43.78.
 
The women's squad (7-3) placed in the top three spots in the 1,000 and 200-yard freestyles, as well as the 100-yard backstroke; it also placed in the top two spots in the 50 and 100-yard freestyle races and the 200-yard IM. Colleen Tighe (Linwood, NJ) finished first in the 1,000-yard freestyle in 11:17.38—more than a 15-second margin—and was followed by teammates Jennifer Barkofski (Norristown, PA) and Alicia Jenkins (Downingtown, PA). Laura Harris (Phoenix, MD), Leonelli and Carly Wray (Ocean View, NJ) touched in as the top three in the 200-yard freestyle with times of 1:57.74, 2:05.31 and 2:07.12, respectively. Taking charge of the 100-yard backstroke was Walker, touching in with a time of 1:05.66. She was closely followed by Kaitlin Harnish (Havertown, PA) and Wray, who finished second and third in the event.
 
Walker and Harnish finished first and second in the 50-yard freestyle, as well, with times of 27.09 and 27.42, respectively. With a time of 2:25.47, Hayley Conover (Egg Harbor Twp., NJ) took first in the 200-yard IM. Kerry McIntyre (Wilmington, DE) closed second in 2:33.47. Harris, again, touched in first in the 100-yard freestyle in 54.69, with Carli Rapp (Reading, PA) touching in next with a time of 1:01.21.
 
The men's squad (4-6) took first in eight different individual races and second in two. William Gelgot (Lebanon, PA) took both the 200 and 500-yard freestyle races with times of 1:53.16 and 5:13.08, respectively, winning the 500 by about four seconds. Touching in three seconds ahead of his Cabrini competitor, Andrew Olchowecky (Philadelphia, PA) took first in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 51.73. He also finished second in the 50-yard freestyle. With about a 17-second lead Vadim Belogorodsky (Huntingdon Valley, PA) took the 1,000-yard freestyle in 11:18.66. Lawley and Ray Conover (Egg Harbor Twp., NJ) placed first and second in the 100-yard backstroke, touching in with times of 56.16 and 1:00.80, respectively. Conover took first in the 200-yard IM with a time of 2:11.18, about seven seconds ahead of the next finisher. Madore and Ranalli took first in each of their individual races, with Madore taking the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:06.05 and Ranalli winning the 100-yard butterfly in 59.78, about five seconds ahead of the second place finisher.

The meet was capped off with the men's 200-yard freestyle relay team, which included Lawley, Gelgot, Madore and Conover, winning by about ten seconds with a time of 1:33.94.
 
Next Saturday, both teams host Elizabethtown at 1:00 pm for their sixth Commonwealth Conference meet of the year.
