Women's Soccer Falls, 3-2 in Overtime, at Rutgers-Newark

(box score)

Widener this time was on the wrong side of an overtime decision as it fell, 3-2, at Rutgers-Newark.

The Scarlet Raiders (1-3) opened things in the third minute when Sarah Cunha scored off a pass from Valentina Palchetti.  But the Pride (1-1) tied it one minute later when junior Karen Thomas (Mullica Hill, NJ) shot one inside the far post off a feed from sophomore Nicole Foschini (Laurel Springs, NJ).

Rutgers-Newark grabbed a 2-1 lead in the 52nd minute when Mercedes Lois scored on a header.  But Widener found a way in the 81st minute as junior Julia Flower (Burlington, CT) launched a 40-yard free kick that went off the goalkeeper's hands and in.

But two days after Widener notched a 1-0 overtime win at Swarthmore, it gave up the decider.  Lois again was there for a header, burying a free kick from Janelle Vega just 75 seconds into the period.

Junior Olivia Yoh (Wernersville, PA) had five shots and senior Vanessa Hejnas (Delran, NJ) made six saves for the Pride.

Lois took seven shots and Kelsey Benoit had two saves for the Scarlet Raiders.

Widener on Saturday plays New Jersey City University at 5:00 pm in Newark, NJ.
