Volleyball Hosts Tri-Match And Finishes 1-1

(vs. DeSales) / (vs. St. Mary's)

Widener hosted DeSales and St. Mary's (MD) today for its first Tri-Match of the year and each team ended with a 1-1 record.

Against DeSales, Widener lost 3-1 (25-23, 22-25, 12-25, 21-25) in a back-and-forth effort. The Pride lost the lead in the beginning of the first set, but eventually racked up the points needed to tie it 16-16. Through some great offense and tough defense, Widener was able to take the first set 25-23.

The second set looked to be going in Widener's favor when it came from behind to take a 22-20 lead. After giving up a point and taking a time out, the Pride gave up its lead and DeSales went on a five-point streak to win the set and tie the match.

DeSales in the third set took full advantage of Pride hitting and serving errors and won 25-12. The fourth set proved to be anybody's to win as the lead changed multiple times. Widener held the lead at 21-20, but DeSales fired back with several blocks and kills to win the set 25-21 and the match 3-1.

In the second match of the day, St. Mary's had non-stop offense and high energy to defeat DeSales in three sets (25-22, 25-20, 25-20).

Against St. Mary's (10-5) Widener had to play the full five sets before securing a 3-2 (24-26, 25-18, 14-25, 28-26, 15-10) win.

Widener (10-11) pulled itself together after suffering a loss in its first match and unleashed 14 kills along with some outstanding defense, but fell short in the first set 24-26. The Pride ran away with the score and secured a 15-7 lead when Angela DiMaria (Warrington, PA) made an excellent dig that was then set up for Jessica Dembeck (Philadelphia, PA) to put away. The two teams had a battle in the end, switching the lead a few times, until St. Mary's eventually won the first of five sets.

Widener came back to win the second set 25-18. The lead seemed to change with every new point with both teams bringing it all on both offense and defense. Towards the end of the set, DiMaria slammed down an overpass to make the score 19-16, in our favor, and sent St. Mary's into a time out. Shauna Phillips (Dallas, PA) shut down a Seahawks hitter in a one-on-one effort and followed with a back-door slide kill to help the squad win the second set.

St. Mary's fired back in the third set to beat Widener 25-14 and take the lead in the match. The majority of the fourth set saw Widener in the lead, but eventually the score was tied 21-21. The Seahawks took the lead when a serve just barely tipped over the net tape, but DiMaria was quick to get a kill to tie up the score again. With St. Mary's holding match-point and a two point lead, the Pride took advantage of some hitting errors and tied the game 24-24. A cross-court kill put St. Mary's in winning position again, but DiMaria had yet another kill and St. Mary's let another ball drop to give the Pride set advantage. Meghan Spence (Havertown, PA) served up an unreturnable ball for Widener to win the fourth set 28-26.

The final match of the day came down to the fifth set (to fifteen points), and Kaitlin Schnalzer (Bethlehem, PA) helped pace the offense with six kills. With the set tied at eight points each, Schnalzer slammed down four kills—one from the back row—and DiMaria put one away to win the set and the match.

For the whole day, Schnalzer hammered 23 kills, including 17 against St. Mary's. DiMaria was huge on offense with 21 total kills and two aces to go with 26 digs on defense. Dembeck totaled 17 kills, five aces and eight digs, while Stephanie Schutt (Tucson, AZ) and Victoria Miller (West Chester, PA) had 29 and 23 digs, respectively. Phillips put up four solo blocks and seven kills. Spence gathered a total of 58 digs, 12 assists and three service aces and setter Maggie Greenberg (Meadowbrook, PA) had a day with 74 assists, 20 digs and seven kills of her own.

Widener next travels to face Hood in a Commonwealth Conference match on Wednesday, beginning at 7:00 pm.
