Garvey And Balonis Combine For Three Goals in Field Hockey's 3-2 Win Over Delaware Valley

(boxscore)
Widener fell behind early but worked together to overcome defeat against Delaware Valley tonight in its 3-2 victory at Edith R. Dixon Field.

Delaware Valley's Leah Hawthorne scored the first goal 11 minutes into the first half, but freshman Meghan Garvey (Landenberg, PA) netted her eighth of the season to even up the score at about 23 minutes. Katie Ferguson (Glen Mills, PA) inserted a penalty corner to Nicole Nardone (Garwood, NJ), who took a shot that was saved by Aggies (3-6) keeper Sandra Edwards. Garvey then picked up the rebound and shot it to the back of the net.

Garvey hit her ninth of the season about 44 minutes into the game, with the assist going to Brittany Creighton (Pitman, NJ) to give the Pride (2-7) its first lead of the game, 2-1. However, about five minutes later Hawthorne scored her second of the game and sixth of the season to tie the score at 2-2, with the assist going to Taylor Prichett.

Both teams were looking to end it in regulation, but Widener junior Samantha Balonis (Northumberland, PA) made that decision when she hit her first goal of the season at the 64-minute mark with Olivia Burgese (Collegeville, PA) getting the assist.

Widener had nine penalty corners to Delaware Valley's six, and also recorded one more shot. Hannah Dinsmore recorded two defensive saves. Jessica Sochocky (Hammonton, NJ) spent 55 minutes between the posts and made one save with two goals allowed. Maggie Karmeris (Wilmington, DE) stepped in for the remaining 15 minutes and made one save.

Widener is home Tuesday as it faces Lebanon Valley for its second Commonwealth Conference face-off at 7:00 pm.
