Women’s Lacrosse Wins, 20-7, Over Albright In Conference Opener

(box score)
Julia Costello (Brookhaven, PA) matched her career high with six goals for Widener, which scored 14 goals in the first half to help secure a 20-7 win over Albright in both teams Commonwealth Conference opener in Reading, PA.

Albright scored the first two goals of the game, by Tia Claxton and Meghan Wilson, but it was not long before Widener's Jen Harnden (Hershey, PA) got the ball from Julia Costello (Brookhaven, PA) and put it in the goal to put the Pride on the board. About a minute later, Angie Goff (Monmouth Junction, NJ) scored the second goal for Widener.

Costello scored the first of her four goals with 23:14 remaining in the first half. Her first shot attempt hit off of the post, but she got the ball back on a pass from Amy Albano (Columbia, MD) and this time was able to lift the Pride (5-4, 1-0 CC) to a 3-2 lead.

From 22:34 to the 17-minute marker Widener scored five goals past goalkeeper Arlena Diep, forcing the home team to take a timeout. Less than a minute later, Albright's Kim Harkins scored a goal for Albright, briefly breaking Widener's momentum before Costello and Rachel Porter (Medford, NJ) scored a goal apiece in the span of a minute. Wilson scored the fourth and final goal for the Lions in the first half with 12 minutes to go, but Widener was not done. Four more goals were put up on the scoreboard for the Pride, two from Albano.

At the end of the first half, Costello and Albano each had four goals. Porter notched five assists. Freshman Megan Dunn (Oxford, PA) was between the posts for all 30 minutes, allowing just four goals and making eight saves.

In the second half the Pride scored six more goals, Albright three. Again, the Lions (4-8, 0-1) scored the first goal of the half, but freshman Melissa Sailey (Swedesboro, NJ) scored on a free position shot shortly after. Widener did not stop the offense, scoring five more goals from 11 shots in the half. Senior Linda Salcedo (Media, PA) stepped into goal for the complete second half, allowing three goals and making three saves.

Costello, who scored six goals against Gwynedd-Mercy on March 27, also ended with two assists and won six draw controls. Sailey netted two of her three shots and won three draw controls for the Pride.  Albano closed with four goals and freshman Pinky Schneider (Moorestown, NJ) had three.

As a team, Widener picked up nine more ground balls, made seven fewer turnovers, and was more successful in clears than Albright.

Widener next plays on Tuesday, when it hosts Alvernia in another Commonwealth Conference face-off, beginning at 7:00 pm in Chester, PA.
