Women's Lacrosse Dealt 11-9 Loss by Eastern

(box score)

Junior Julia Costello (Brookhaven, PA) continued her strong play with four goals, but it was not enough for Widener in an 11-9 loss to Eastern at Edith R. Dixon Field.

Eastern (2-6) took a 7-4 halftime lead thanks to three goals from Courtney Reinhold.  Costello had three goals in the half for Widener.

The teams traded goals over the first 20 minutes of the second half to keep the margin at three before Kendall Rood tallied for the Eagles with 9:57 left for an 11-7 contest.  Senior Rachel Porter (Medford, NJ) scored with 4:16 to play for Widener and Costello tallied exactly a minute later for a two-goal game.

Senior Jen Harnden (Hershey, PA) won the ensuing draw control as Widener (4-4) looked to get within one.  But Eastern goalkeeper Kristy Getsay game up with arguably the game's biggest play, stopping Porter's point-blank attempt with three minutes left on what turned out to be Widener's last shot of the contest.

Costello recorded her team-high fourth hat trick this season and has 11 goals over her last three contests.  She takes over the team lead with 18 goals this year.

Harnden had two goals and five ground balls with Porter, sophomore Amy Albano (Columbia, MD) and freshman Melissa Sailey (Swedesboro, NJ) also tallying for the Pride.  Freshman Megan Dunn (Oxford, PA) made seven saves.

Reinhold scored four goals with Rood and Sara Blaylock adding two apiece for Eastern.  Getsay totaled nine saves that included five in the second half.

Widener opens play in the newly created Commonwealth Conference on Thursday, when it visits Albright for a 4:00 pm start in Reading, PA.
