Baseball Ends Season by Dropping Two at Alvernia

(Game 1) / (Game 2)

Widener could not hold on to a late lead in game one and was handed a Commonwealth Conference doubleheader sweep by first-place Alvernia, 5-4 and 5-1 in Reading, PA.

Widener (20-19, 7-11 CC) in game one grabbed a 4-3 lead in the top of the fifth inning.  Junior Dennis Hocker (Coral Springs, FL) doubled, reached third on a fielder's choice from freshman Matt Scherer (Havertown, PA) and scored on a sacrifice fly by sophomore Kyle Summers (Mohnton, PA).

But the Crusaders scored twice in the last of the seventh for the walk-off win.  Nole Saylor reached on a sacrifice that was misplayed and allowed Brian Witkowski to score for a 4-4 tie.  With the bases loaded and none out, Saylor crossed home when another grounder was booted for an error.

Junior Matt Hone (Newtown, PA) went 3-for-3 and Hocker closed with two hits.  Norristown, PA freshman Robert Barth (2-3) was charged with three runs and six hits over 5 2/3 innings.

Rich Collins got the win, giving up one hit over one scoreless inning for the Crusaders (28-10-1, 16-2).  Matt O'Neill had two RBI.

Alvernia in game two took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first on an RBI double from Aaron Carman.  The margin grew to 3-0 in the second on a run-scoring single from Cody Younker and an RBI double from Saylor.

West Chester, PA senior Rick Kazigian (4-4) gave up five runs – four earned – and seven hits over three innings for the Pride.  Junior Brendan O'Brien (Coatesville, PA) ended with two hits.

Steve Price struck out five, yielding one run and five hits over seven innings for Alvernia.  Saylor closed with two hits and two RBI.
