Baseball Tripped Up, 12-7, by No. 9 Keystone

(box score)

Widener could not hold on to an early two-run lead and was handed a 12-7 loss by ninth-ranked Keystone in La Plume, PA.

Widener (20-16) opened a 2-0 cushion in the top of the third inning when sophomore Nick Cook (Cranford, NJ) lined a two-run single to center.  Keystone got one run back in the bottom of the frame on an RBI groundout from Tyler Castera.

But the Giants (28-4) erupted for eight runs in the bottom of the sixth for a 9-2 lead.  Frank Mormino had a two-run single and Chris Bzozowski added a two-RBI double to cap the frame.

Senior Sean Saverio (Hatboro, PA) and sophomore Colin Weiss (Red Hill, PA) each rapped three hits and Cook finished with three RBI for the Pride.  Dallas, PA freshman Marc Noyalis (1-1) was charged with three runs – two earned – and one hit over one inning.

Brian Del Rosso had three hits and Bzozowski posted three RBI for Keystone.  Mike Rossi gave up one run and three hits over two relief innings for the Giants.

Widener this weekend has a huge three-game series against Alvernia, starting Friday at 3:30 pm in Chester.  The Pride over the three games must have one more victory than Elizabethtown or two more than Messiah to make the Commonwealth Conference Tournament.  Elizabethtown and Messiah play each other in a three-game series to close the regular season.
