Women's Lacrosse Gives All in 15-5 Loss to No. 9 Messiah

Widener played tough against a strong team in No. 9 Messiah, but was handed a 15-5 Commonwealth Conference loss at Edith R. Dixon Field.
 
Widener's tough defense held Messiah to just one goal over the first 16 minutes.  The Falcons (11-2, 3-0 CC) scored the game's first five goals over 25 minutes as Rachel Dirksen and Lizzy Keeney each found the back of the net twice.
 
Despite being down 7-2 at halftime, Widener (6-6, 2-2 CC) only trailed 15-10 in shots and kept on the pressure.  Freshman Angie Goff (Monmouth Junction, NJ) cut the margin to 7-3 early in the half by scoring off a feed from senior Jen Harnden (Hershey, PA).
 
But the Falcons (11-2, 3-0) scored the next seven goals for a 14-3 margin with 10:01 remaining.  Dirksen netted three goals in that run with Kiersten McGreer and Meghan Doolittle getting two apiece.
 
Goff netted three goals for her third hat trick of the season.  Senior Rachel Porter (Medford, NJ) and freshman Mackenzie Lindquist (Ocean City, NJ) also scored, Melissa Sailey (Swedesboro, NJ) posted six draw controls and fellow freshman Megan Dunn (Oxford, PA) made 10 saves for the Pride.
 
Dirksen scored six goals, Doolittle had three and Taylor Phillips made five saves.  Messiah also notched an impressive 18 caused turnovers with Maddie Comfort getting five.
 
Widener is home Saturday on Family Day against Lebanon Valley at 1:00 pm.
