Rachel Porter and Julia Costello Lead Women's Lacrosse to 22-12 Triumph at Lycoming

(box score)

Senior Rachel Porter (Medford, NJ) broke the school record with six assists, just missed another with 11 points and junior Julia Costello (Brookhaven, PA) scored six goals again for Widener in a huge 22-12 Commonwealth Conference win at Lycoming in Williamsport, PA.

The contest was academic in the opening half, when Widener almost broke the scoreboard with a 15-5 lead and an alarming 25-9 shots edge.  Costello scored five goals in that span, Porter netted four to go with all of her assists and junior Laura Kalbach (Lancaster, PA) completed a hat trick.

The Pride held a 5-3 lead with just under 18 minutes left in the half before rattling off a 10-2 run before intermission.  Costello found the back of the net four times in that spurt.

Porter's assists shattered the previous mark of five accomplished eight times, most recently by Costello on April 29, 2010 against King's.  Her points fell just shy of the record of 12, shared by Jackie Elliott against Alvernia on April 8, 2009 and Courtney Patton versus Cedar Crest on April 2, 1991.

Costello scored six goals for the third time this season, it was her seven hat trick of the year including her fourth consecutive and she has 20 goals over her last four contests.

Kalbach ended with four points, senior Jen Harnden (Hershey, PA) had two goals and an assist and freshman Angie Goff (Monmouth Junction, NJ) netted two goals for the Pride (6-5, 2-1 CC), who have won four of their last six contests.

Freshman Megan Dunn (Oxford, PA) made three saves in the first half and senior Linda Salcedo (Media, PA) had the same after the break.

It is the most goals Widener has scored since netting 23 against Averett on March 4, 2003.

Amber Graybill had five goals and an assist with Kristina Maurer making 14 saves for Lycoming (3-9, 0-3).

Widener is home Wednesday against No. 9 Messiah, beginning at 4:00 pm.
