Baseball Sweeps a Pair in Florida

(vs. Ohio Northern) / (vs. Hiram)

Widener woke up bright and early for a 14-4 victory against Ohio Northern before notching a 9-8 triumph in the afternoon versus Hiram in Fort Myers, FL.
 
The 9:00 am start was no problem for Widener (3-3).  Senior Sean Saverio (Horsham, PA) had four hits with three RBI and sophomore Nick Cook (Cranford, NJ) posted three hits with two RBI, falling a home run short of the cycle.  Senior Eric Von Stetina (Collegeville, PA) amassed three hits and an RBI.
 
Hazelton, PA senior Franco LaBraico (2-0) fired 2 1/3 scoreless innings for the win.  Freshman Scott Merz (Mohnton, PA) struck out eight, allowing four earned runs over the first 4 2/3 innings.
 
Against Hiram, Belford, NJ junior Brandon McCloskey (1-1) struck out four and yielded five earned runs over 6 1/3 innings.  This helped the Pride open a 9-3 lead before the Terriers (3-1) left the tying run on second base in the ninth inning.
 
Senior Bill Hollingsworth (Drexel Hill, PA) continued his torrid start with four hits, a double, an RBI and picthed the final 1 1/3 innings for the save.  Junior Dennis Hocker (Coral Springs, FL) went 3-for-3 with a double, two sacrifices and an RBI with Saverio getting two hits, a double and an RBI.
 
Widener on Tuesday faces Heidelberg, beginning at 10:00 am.
