Baseball Takes Tough 12-9 Loss vs. Elizabethtown In Back-And-Forth Game

(boxscore)
Widener fought to take the lead back in the bottom of the eight inning, but could not hang on as Elizabethtown rapped six hits in the top of the ninth for the win, giving the Pride a 12-9 loss in the first game of this three-game Commonwealth Conference series.

Jason Ferrie (Royersford, PA) got the start, but was taken out after throwing four complete innings once the Elizabethtown scored seven runs on him—mostly due to the defense committing an error in each inning he pitched. Out of 25 batters faced, Ferrie gave up nine hits, just one earned run, struck out two and walked two.

The Blue Jays (12-7, 3-1 CC) got a jump on the scoreboard in the first inning, scoring three quick runs off of three hits and an error. Widener came back in the second inning and scored twice. At the bottom half of the lineup, Brendan O'Brien (Coatesville, PA) reached on a left-side single, Eric Von Stetina (Collegeville, PA) and Matt Hone (Newtown, PA) each drew a full-count walk, and leadoff man Michael Riverso (Philadelphia, PA) singled to the right-side to score both O'Brien and Von Stetina before the inning ended.

Just one run behind, Ferrie shut down the Blue Jays with two strikeouts and a groundout, giving up just one hit. Dan Sieracki (Cherry Hill, NJ) got things going in the bottom of the third with a single through the left side of the infield, but was retired on a fielder's choice to second base. With Bill Hollingsworth (Drexel Hill, PA) standing on first, third baseman Dennis Hocker (Coral Springs, FL) ripped one over the Blue Monster in left field and boosted the Pride to take a 4-3 lead.

The fourth inning allowed Elizabethtown to once again take the lead. Shortstop Kyle Gable showed a sacrifice bunt but was safe at first after a bobbled throw at first base, moving Tyler Weary—who reached on a leadoff single through the middle—to second with no outs. A double by first baseman Steve Motika scored both men and gave the Blue Jays the lead. Another double, this time by Pat Mulligan, scored Motika as well as Matt Reade, who reached on a walk. At the end of the inning, the score was 7-4.

The Pride (12-8, 4-3) had two big innings in the seventh and eighth. Sean Saverio (Horsham, PA) reached first after getting beamed in the back by pitcher Matt Ruth, and was moved to third on a right field line double by Sieracki. Saverio scored on a groundout by Hollingsworth, giving him an RBI and leaving the Pride two runs away from tying up the ball game. Hocker then stepped up and blasted another one out of the park, this time to right field, giving him his first career multiple-home run game and tying the game 8-8.

In the bottom of the eighth inning, O'Brien reached on a single down the right field line, was bunted over to second by Von Stetina, and moved to third on a groundout to shortstop. A routine groundball to shortstop Gable hit by Riverso that could have ended the inning resulted in Widener taking the lead after Gable threw to ball over the glove of first baseman Motika.

Hollingsworth (0-1) moved from the designated hitter spot to the mound in the top of the ninth, but could not make the save. Elizabethtown's bats heated up as it got six hits in that last inning and scored four runs. When it was Widener's turn to counteract the previous half-inning, Sieracki, Hollingsworth and Hocker were retired in order.

Kris Davis (1-1) got the win, pitching three innings with four strikeouts and allowing three earned runs.

Hocker ended the day batting 2-for-5 with four RBI, all from his home runs. O'Brien had a day, hitting 3-for-4 and scoring three times.

Widener continues the series Saturday, as it travels to Elizabethtown to play a doubleheader, beginning at noon.
