Jason Ferrie Pitches Baseball to 2-1 Victory at Lebanon Valley

(box score)

Senior Jason Ferrie (Royersford, PA) pitched eight scoreless innings to get the victory and Widener held on in the ninth for a 2-1 Commonwealth Conference win at Lebanon Valley in Annville, PA.

Widener (11-5, 3-1 CC) took a 1-0 lead in the top of the fifth.  Junior Dennis Hocker (Coral Springs, FL) hit a one-out double down the left-field line, one of his team-high two hits, and sophomore Michael Riverso (Philadelphia, PA) singled him to third.  Junior Matt Hone (Newtown, PA) followed with a sacrifice fly to right.

The Pride then got an ultra-important insurance run in the ninth.  Senior Dan Sieracki (Cherry Hill, NJ) reached on a two-out throwing error by third baseman Andrew Wooley and took third on a single from senior Bill Hollingsworth (Drexel Hill, PA).  The two then executed a double steal and Sieracki scored for a 2-0 margin.

The Dutchmen (8-8, 2-2) then made things interesting in the ninth.  Aaron Mills and Jordan Witmer each were walked by Hollingsworth to lead off the ninth.  Jacob Rhody reached on a fielder's choice bunt that erased Mills and sent Witmer to second.  Dustin Deibert then reached on a fielder's choice that chased Witmer to third and got Rhody eradicated at second for the second out.

Pinch-hitter Tom Rasich then reached on an error by Hocker at third base to score Witmer and Derek Brousseau walked to load the bases.  But Hollingsworth got out of it as Phillip Dohner popped out to senior Eric Von Stetina (Collegeville, PA) at second to give Widener its sixth victory in the last seven outings.

Ferrie (2-1) had his best outing of the season, yielding just six hits and one walk with two strikeouts.  Hollingsworth posted his team-best third save and also extended his career-best hitting streak to 16 games.  He is the only one for the Pride with a hit in every game this year.

Caleb Fick (2-1) gave up two runs – one earned – and four hits over nine innings with four strikeouts for LVC.  Ryan Schwartz ended with two hits.

These teams on Saturday will play a doubleheader in Chester.  Please note the start time has been moved up to 11:00 am.
