Baseball's Eighth and Ninth-Inning Rallies Lift it to 11-7 Win at Rutgers-Camden

(box score)

Widener scored nine runs over the final two innings to eradicate a five-run deficit and post an 11-7 victory over Rutgers-Camden at Campbell's Field in Camden, NJ.

Down 7-2, Widener scored four times in the eighth inning to close to 7-6.  Michael Riverso (Philadelphia, PA) lined an RBI double, scored on a double-play ball hit by fellow sophomore Andrew Gehringer (Boyertown, PA) and senior Dan Sieracki (Cherry Hill, NJ) ripped a two-run double to left.

The Pride (10-5) then tacked on five more in the ninth for the final.  Riverso hit an infield single off the pitcher for a 7-7 tie and Gehringer had the go-ahead RBI single through the left side for an 8-7 cushion.  Eric Von Stetina (Collegeville, PA) added a run-scoring double to make it 9-7 and fellow senior Sean Saverio (Horsham, PA) contributed a two-run single.

Senior Bill Hollingsworth (Drexel Hill, PA) had four hits and Sieracki added three, which extended both of their career-best hitting streaks to 15 games.  Saverio and Riverso also had three hits apiece as part of Widener's season-high 18 hits.

Dallas, PA freshman Marc Noyalis (1-0) got his first collegiate win, striking out three and yielding three hits over two scoreless innings for the Pride, who have won 10 of their last 13 contests.

Dan Snyder (0-1) was charged with three runs and four hits over an inning for the Scarlet Raptors (6-6).  Albert Rivera closed with three hits and four stolen bases.  Jon Siswo lined a two-run triple as part of a six-run sixth inning that gave Rutgers-Camden a 7-2 lead.

Widener on Friday visits Lebanon Valley for a 3:30 pm Commonwealth Conference game in Annville, PA.
