Baseball Dealt 3-1 Setback at Albright

(box score)

Widener received great pitching from senior Jason Ferrie (Royersford, PA), but in the end was handed a 3-1 Commonwealth Conference loss by Albright in Reading, PA.

The game was scoreless until the bottom of the sixth inning, when Albright grabbed a 1-0 lead.  Jon Raymond reached on a two-out error and scored when Tony Canuso ripped a double.

The Lions (6-12, 1-2 CC) pushed their lead to 3-0 in the eighth.  Max Dundore lined an RBI single and later scored in the frame on another infield error.

Widener (9-5, 2-1) got one back in the ninth.  Junior Dennis Hocker (Coral Springs, FL) and sophomore Michael Riverso (Philadelphia, PA) had back-to-back two-out singles and junior Matt Hone (Newtown, PA) drove home Hocker with an RBI single.  Doug Mace then was called on to face junior Brendan O'Brien (Coatesville, PA), who flied out to left field to end the contest.

Ferrie (1-1) could not be blamed for this one, allowing only three runs – one earned – and four hits over eight innings with five strikeouts.  Hocker and Riverso had two hits apiece.

Seniors Bill Hollingsworth (Drexel Hill, PA) and Dan Sieracki (Cherry Hill, NJ) each had a single to run their hitting streaks to 14 games apiece for Widener.

Matt Rehrig (3-2) struck out eight over 8 2/3 innings, permitting one run and eight hits for the Lions.

Widener hits the road Tuesday to face Rutgers-Camden, beginning at 3:30 pm.
