Baseball Rallies for Two Victories Over Albright

(Game 1) / (Game 2)

Widener in game one scored twice in the bottom of the seventh inning for a crazy 6-5 Commonwealth Conference win over Albright before rallying again in the nightcap for a 9-6 triumph in Chester, PA.

Albright (5-12, 0-2 CC) in the seventh inning of game one grabbed a 5-4 lead as Tom Canuso ripped a two-run single with one out.  It was the Lions first lead of the contest.

But Widener (9-4, 2-0) unbelievable won it the bottom of the frame.  Senior Bill Hollingsworth (Drexel Hill, PA) reached on a one-out error by shortstop Alex Myers and sophomore Nick Cook (Cranford, NJ) singled sophomore pinch-runner Andrew Farris (Red Hill, PA) to second.  After a flyout, a grounder from junior Dennis Hocker (Coral Springs, FL) that would have ended the game was booted again by Myers and Farris scored for a 5-5 tie.

With Hocker on first and Cook at third, Widener went for a double steal and it worked.  Hocker was caught between first and second base, but second baseman Nate Peiffer dropped the throw and it allowed Cook to score for the win.

Dan Sieracki (Cherry Hill, NJ) homered as part of his two-hit day with fellow senior Sean Saverio (Horsham, PA) and junior Brendan O'Brien (Coatesville, PA) also getting two hits for the Pride.  West Chester, PA senior Rick Kazigian (2-1) pitched great out of the bullpen, yielding two runs and three hits over 1 2/3 innings.

Jared Heiheiser (2-2) was dealt a tough loss, permitting two unearned run and two hits over 1 2/3 frames for the Lions.  Jon Raymond finished with two hits.

Widener in game two trailed 6-1 going to the bottom of the fourth and 6-2 entering the fifth before plating six runs in the fifth and sending 12 hitters to the plate for an 8-6 lead.  Sieracki began the onslaught with a two-run homer over the blue monster in left field for a 6-4 deficit.

With two outs and no runners on, the inning was prolonged in a big way when Hocker's grounder was booted by third baseman Zac Okonski.  Sophomore Andrew Gehringer (Boyertown, PA) hit an infield single for a 6-5 game, senior Eric Von Stetina (Collegeville, PA) ripped a two-run single to right for a 7-6 lead and Saverio closed the scoring in the frame with an infield single that plated Gehringer.

Belford, NJ junior Brandon McCloskey (2-2) gave the Pride a huge lift on the mound, allowing no hits over 2 1/3 scoreless innings.  All three baserunners on his watch reached on errors.

Hollingsworth fired a perfect seventh inning for the save.  Sieracki closed with three hits as both he and Hollingsworth extended their hitting streaks to 13 games.

Cook had a hit in both contests and is riding a nine-game hitting streak.

Brooks Mitzkewich (0-1) gave up four unearned runs and three hits over 2/3 of an inning for Albright.  Peiffer ended with two hits.

These teams play the finale of their three-game series Sunday in Reading, beginning at 1:00 pm.
