Women’s Swimming Notches Victory Over Albright; Men’s Swimming Defeated

Widener Women's Swimming secured a 106-99 victory in today's Commonwealth Conference meet against Albright while the Men were defeated 118-66 at Schwartz Center.
 
The Women's squad (2-1, 2-0 MAC) notched six first place titles that helped it overcome Albright (2-1, 2-1 MAC). Laura Harris (Phoenix, MD) secured two titles, coming first in the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 59.64 and the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:11.10. Junior Colleen Tighe (Linwood, NJ) took the 500-yard freestyle in 5:29.70 and finished second in the 1,650 freestyle with a time of 18:46.41, close to 35 seconds ahead of the third place finisher.
 
Carly Wray (Ocean View, NJ) and Sara Leonelli (Vineland, NJ) each took second in their respective races. Wray finished the 50-yard freestyle in 26.58 and Leonelli stopped the clock at 56.86 in the 100-yard freestyle. Annie Walker (New Castle, DE) finished with a time of 1:04.14 in the 100-yard backstroke to take second place, with Kaitlin Harnish (Havertown, PA) followed close behind and finished in 1:06.34, good for third.
 
Kelsey Lake (Ijamsville, NJ) took the 200-yard freestyle by about four seconds with a time of 1:59.71 and Jennifer Barkofski (Norristown, PA) was the first-place finisher in the 400-yard IM in 4:57.29, ahead by more than seven second. Barkofski also took third in both the 500-yard freestyle and the 100-yard breaststroke.
 
Walker, Leonelli, Harris and Lake made up the first place 400-yard medley relay squad that finished by more than ten seconds ahead of the second place team with a time of 4:09.88. Walker and lake were also a part of the 400-yard freestyle relay team that took second in 3:49.35, along with Tighe and Wray.
 
The Men's 400-yard freestyle relay squad took first with a time of 3:32.61 and comprised of Andrew Gelgot (Lebanon, PA), Vadim Belogorodsky (Huntingdon Valley, PA), Andrew Olchowecky (Philadelphia, PA) and Ray Conover (Egg Harbor, NJ).
 
Gelgot also notched an individual victory for Widener (1-2, 1-1 MAC) in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:51.27 and took third in the 100-yard freestyle in 51.02. Stephen Ranalli (Wildwood, NJ) placed second in the 100-yard butterfly in 58.69 and Conover finished the 400-yard IM in 4:44.13, good for third. Andy Madore (State College, PA) took the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:05.67 and Michael Lawley (Philadelphia, PA) took the 100-yard backstroke in 55.13 by more than three seconds. Lawley also took third in the 50-yard freestyle in 22.74.
 
Lawley, Madore, Ranalli and Olchowecky made up the 400-yard medley relay squad that placed second with a time of 3:48.79.


Both squads will swim Wednesday at Swarthmore as part of the "320 Challenge," starting at 6:30 pm.
