Field Hockey Drops 3-0 Game To Alvernia

(boxscore)
Widener put up the shots, but none found the net as it lost 3-0 to Alvernia in a Commonwealth Conference game at Edith R. Dixon Field as part of Widener's Homecoming weekend.

The first half ended with Alvernia (7-6, 2-2 CC) up by one after Brittany Barcus scored off of a feed from Miranda Peto 19 minutes into it. Widener had its chance to score a goal to tie the game, and did, but the goal was recalled due to a technicality.

The Crusaders notched a second goal in the beginning of the second half when the ball was knocked in by a Widener defender on a penalty corner, the goal was credited to Melanie Lowry.

Just before the 62nd minute, Peto went on a fast break towards the goal and was able to avoid the diving Widener goalkeeper Maggie Karmeris (Wilmington, DE) and tipped the ball into an open net to make the score 3-0.

Widener (2-9, 0-3) put up 18 shots to Alvernia's 17 and had two more corners, including ten in the first half alone. Nicole Nardone (Garwood, NJ) and Olivia Burgese (Collegeville, PA) each took four shots, with Meghan Garvey (Landenberg, PA) and Katie Ferguson (Glen Mills, PA) taking three apiece.

Karmeris made 10 saves for the game. Alvernia's Erin Wunsch got the win after making nine saves.

The Pride will next travel to take on Arcadia on Wednesday at 7:00 pm for another Commonwealth Conference face-off.
