Field Hockey Loses Close 2-1 Game To No. 9 Messiah

(boxscore)
Widener played hard in its last home game, but could not come out on top in today's 2-1 Commonwealth Conference game against ninth-ranked Messiah at Edith R. Dixon Field.

Widener held tight during the first half, only giving up one goal to conference leader Messiah (14-3, 8-0 CC) at 24:53 when Juliana Hershey tipped in her third goal of the season on a cross by Kelly Martin.

Widener (5-11, 3-5) wasted no time in the second half. Junior Samantha Balonis (Northumberland, PA) had the ball near the goal and backhanded it into the net past goalkeeper Molly Gebrosky just 39 seconds into the second period to tie the score. About 10 minutes later, Brooke Sands scored her seventh goal of the year for Messiah as a result of a penalty corner.

Widener tried to even the score once again, with one of its closer attempts happening with just less than 13 minutes remaining in the game when junior Hannah Robinson (Clarksville, MD) crossed the ball in front of the goal, but nobody was there in time to tip it to create a goal.

Senior Nicole Nardone (Garwood, NJ) had two defensive saves for the Pride to help keep the game close. Sophomore goalkeeper Maggie Karmeris (Wilmington, DE) played the full game between the posts and made six saves.

Widener will travel on Saturday to take on Goucher in its last game of the season, beginning at 1:00 pm.
