Men’s And Women’s Swimming Top Lebanon Valley In Season Opener

Widener Men's and Women's swimming came out on top today against Lebanon Valley in both team's season opener with the men winning 111-67 and the women taking it 124-75.
 
The women's side took first place in eight events. The 200-yard Medley Relay squad, which consisted of Annie Walker (New Castle, DE), Sara Leonelli (Vineland, NJ), Laura Harris (Phoenix, ND) and Kelsey Lake (Ijamsville, NJ), was the first event of the day and they took first in 1:56.57. In the 1,000-yard freestyle, Widener (1-0) took the first three spots with Colleen Tighe (Linwood, NJ) finishing in 11:24.06, Hayley Conover (Egg Harbor Twp., NJ) in 11:37.60 and Jennifer Barkofski (Norristown, PA) taking third in 11:38.07.
 
Lake and Leonelli took first and third in the 200-yard freestyle with times of 2:00.00 and 2:05. 65, respectively. Harris and Carly Wray (Ocean View, NJ) finished top two in the 50-yard freestyle with times of 26.34 and 27.17. Conover and Barkofski saw their names in the top two slots for the 200-yard IM in 2:22.89 and 2:23.95. Harris, Wray and Carli Rapp (Reading, PA) finished top three in the 100-yard freestyle in 57.16, 57.59 and 1:00.61.
 
Walker, in 1:05.30, and Kaitlin Harnish (Havertown, PA), in 1:06.43, closed top two in the 100-yard backstroke. Tighe, Barkofski and Alicia Jenkins (Downingtown, PA) took the top three spots in the 500-yard freestyle. Tighe finished in 5:37.94, Barkofski in 5:47.22 and Jenkins in 5:52.45.
 
The men's squad finished first in ten different events. Michael Lawley (Philadelphia, PA), Andy Madore (State College, PA), Stephen Ranalli (Wildwood, NJ) and William Gelgot (Lebanon, PA) made up the 200-yard Medley Relay that took first in 1:42.66. Vadim Belogorodsky (Huntingdon Valley, PA) took first place by over 30 seconds in the 1,000-yard freestyle with a time of 11:21.17. In the 200-yard freestyle, Raymond Conover (Egg Harbor Twp., NJ) took first in 1:58.22 and Belogorodsky finished third in 2:02.30.
 
In the 50-yard freestyle race, Andrew Olchowecky (Philadelphia, PA) took first in 23.04 and Gelgot finished a close second in 23.33. Conover and Madore finished less than a second apart in the 200-yard IM, taking first and second with times of 2:15. 83 and 2:16. 23. Olchowecky went up against three Lebanon Valley (0-1) swimmers in the 100-yard freestyle and came out on top with a time of 50.82, beating them by more than six seconds. Lawley saw his name first in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 56.17, finishing about eight seconds ahead of his challenger. Belogorodsky took first again in 5:30.85 in the 500-yard freestyle and Madore closed in 1:06.85 for first in the 100-yard breaststroke. In the final event of the day, the Men's 200-yard freestyle relay team—made up of Olchowecky, Gelgot, Lawley and Conover—took first in 1:32.44.
 
Both teams will travel to Scranton next Saturday, October 27, with the meet beginning at 1:00 pm.
